Who Doesn't Love Brown Bear?

Sunday, September 20, 2015

We went to a Bill Martin workshop years ago
and he stated,
"My dream is to give EVERY Kindergarten class the BIG Book,
Brown Bear, Brown Bear,
What Do You See?"
It truly is the most wonderful book for
young emergent readers.

As a result of our love for Brown Bear,
we created two products
to enrich and to extend the book!
 1.
https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Shared-Reading-Brown-Bear-and-Buddies-with-Extension-Activities-1352615
This product includes:
Ideas for games and retell
A NEW Rhyme book using the characters
Letter sorts based on the animals
Cut up sentences for each animal

Our kiddos enjoyed the Rhyming book
and the Song pocket chart.
2.

This product includes:
Informational text on each animal
WOW!  vocabulary words

A variety of writing formats

Our kiddos loved learning about the animals and then would use the facts to write informational content.

The TWO Best Tips I Ever Learned for Behavior Management!

Thursday, September 17, 2015

As I reflect on my teaching career,
I learned the two best
behavior management tips--
*one my first year of teaching
and
*one my last year of teaching!
I used them both!
(my last year of teaching I had 31 kinders
and no help--these tips helped me survive)

I now sub and I use these tips every time I work in a class.  When you sub,
I found out you have
to build community
and
to establish control
lickety split
in a flash.
As a sub you do not have
treasures or treats.
These two tips have got me through many a sub day with a smile !
I will not lie--there are some classes more difficult than others,
and I have to work extra hard to gain crowd control.
I also know I like kiddos.
I like to have fun and make learning joyful!

PS--I have used these tips with kinders and 4th graders!

PSS--I taught many years --kinder--and I maintained my sanity enough to sub!
Now that should say something!

It's Your Birthday!

Sunday, September 13, 2015

Celebrate!
 Kiddos love their birthdays!
They love to be the center of attention and
be acknowledged for their special day!
They feel valued and loved by their class.

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Kiddos-Connect-to-Birthday-Fun-2058738

We had several birthday traditions we did for each kiddo:
*The birthday kiddo made a special crown.
*The birthday kiddo sat in a special chair and was asked questions from the class.
*We sang songs--and I mean lots of songs--to the birthday kiddo.
*The birthday kiddo blew out a pretend candle to make a wish (we used real candles at one time in our teacher careers, but then the fire alarms got better and better and we wanted to keep our jobs).
*The birthday kiddo got to choose a special birthday book for the class to hear.

We also celebrated the Teacher's Birthday too!

Happy Finger

Wednesday, September 9, 2015

I found out early in my teaching career,
kiddos will listen to a puppet better than they would listen to me.
Consequently I purchased many a puppet
in my teaching life time,
some$ and some $$$$$.
I used them ALL the time—
to teach lessons,
to help with behavior issues,
to sing songs,
 to tell stories.

Then one day the school had to go on an immediate evacuation procedure and
I had NO Puppet with me!
However I did have  a tissue and sharpie marker
in my pocket--
VOILA!
Happy finger was born.

I now use Happy Finger all the time.
He talks to the kiddos and reminds them of appropriate behavior.
He sings
“Round and round
My finger goes
Where it stops
Nobody knows!”
and helps me choose kiddos
to help or to share learning.
(The kiddos do not even question his selection
as he does know best!)
He helps me teach lessons and ask questions.
He sings songs and reads stories.

He models pointing to words during shared reading.
He demonstrates segmenting and blending .
Yes, I still use puppets,
but Happy Finger is always there, ready to do his job.

Why does he work?
Happy Finger actively engages and motivates the kiddos.
The kiddos do not feel intimidated by him.
Happy finger is funny and playful.
He is one of them!

I like Happy Finger because my hand does not get sweaty
and he is not across the room when I need him.

A Disclaimer:
Happy Finger may have to go shopping with you after school—he is hard to remove some days!

Hint: He will help you choose healthy (or not) foods as well as help you select a new outfit that will look terrific on you!
He just twirls around and makes the selection--VOILA!
